Assertions

The assertion category can be viewed as a value judgment by us on the effectiveness of an experiment performed by the developer. There are many examples where the developer of a technology wishes to show that it is effective and becomes both the experimenter and the subject of the study. Sometimes this may be a preliminary test before a more formal validation of the effectiveness of the technology. But all too often, the experiment is a weak example favoring the proposed technology over alternatives. As skeptical scientists, we would have to view these as potentially biased since the goal is not to understand the difference between two treatments, but to show that one particular treatment (the newly developed technology) is superior.

Representam as estratégias onde os desenvolvedores de uma tecnologia desempenham o papel de participantes e de experimentalistas. Estas estratégias apresentam um viés em potencial, pois o objetivo não é entender a diferença entre dois tratamentos, mas mostrar que um tratamento em particular (como por exemplo, a nova tecnologia que está sendo desenvolvida) é superior.

La categoría de las afirmaciones puede ser vista como nuestro juicio de valor sobre la efectividad de un experimento realizado por un desarolador. Hay varios ejemplos donde el desarolador de una tecnología desea mostrar que es efectiva y se convierte tanto en el experimentador como en el sujeto del estudio. A veces esto puede ser una prueba preliminar antes de una validación más formal de la efectividad de una tecnología. Pero también frecuentemente, el experimento es un débil ejemplo a favor de la tecnología propuesta sobre otras alternativas. Como científicos escépticos, debemos ver aquí cierto sesgo potencial, ya que el objetivo no es entender la diferencia entre dos métodos, sino mostrar que uno en particular (la nueva tecnología desarolada) es superior.
